Designing a new Flash course

Last years i have been doing flash training with Adobe authorized training material, after the launch of CS3 Adobe decided to stop making new courseware. So for flash cs3 we tried some other course material but i was always missing the more global picture of creating flash projects, next to that i think that most as3.0 courses are to much focussing on building ria’s.

So i’m thinking about creating a course focussed on flash projects targeted for online marketing. I will be targeting flash developers and designer with a basic knowledge of actionscript.
Some basic ideas for an outline are:

  • checklist before starting
    • wireframes
    • source material: psd, ai’s, fonts
    • copy, translations
    • how to communicate with backend
  • tools
    • fla in flash
    • as in flexbuilder, flashdevelop or fdt
  • setting up
    • framework setup
    • multiple languages
    • server setup
    • backend setup
  • build a solid and flexible navigation system
  • building a reusable framework
  • working together: version control and best practises
  • lab exercise: working together as a team to create a small game

Feel free to make additions or remarks on this basic outline.

Speaking at Multi-Mania

It’s becoming a yearly tradition to speak at the greatest Belgian multimedia event.

My session is going to be a 120 minute hands-on session about AIR. You will play with the Sqlite, file-system and drag and drop.

So see you all at multi-mania (may 23th 2008)!

Sometimes a man’s got to do, what a man’s got to do.

After spending almost three beautiful years four days a week at multimediacollege and 1 day a week at my own little company i decided to make the big switch. From tomorrow on i will be spending my days searching my own clients, doing my own projects and most of all living at my own pace.

Its not a goodbye to multimediacollege, i think we can see it more like another way of working together. In the near future you will still find my in front of the mmc classroom, talking about flash, air and maybe some flex (the more creative side).

What is going on at Dreams & Creations at the moment? Together with syntetik we’re finishing up the Cercled’O site and starting up some other very cool projects. For an Antwerp based agency we’re building two corporate websites. And in the first week of May we will launch together with Resilion an amazing playground for children between 8 and 12 years old. In the spare moments i try working on some experiments and writing my first conference presentation.

And than the question i hear the most: “When will there be a portfolio site?” The answer: “We’re working on it, it will be online somewhere this year ;-). One spoiler maybe? Think Rubik!”.

AIR training

Tomorrow i will be presenting the first hands on training regarding Adobe AIR at multimediacollege.
In the following 2 days i will talk about:

  • Native Windows
  • File System
  • Connecting Applications (localconnection, html content, detecting network)
  • Clipboard and Drag and Drop
  • Sqlite
  • Basic Security
  • Customized deployment

And the end of training the students walk home with a AIR/Flex rssReader.

Afterhours: AIR - in depth & hands-on

Yesterday evening my employer presented their first Afterhours session in ages. Our guest speaker, Peter Elst, showed us in something more than 1 hour the more advanced Air api’s like the “Windowing”, “File”, “Drag and Drop”, “SQLite” and the “Upgrade” api. Peter used 5 little examples showing us step by step howto use the different Api’s. My hands are itching to make some great apps with Air really soon.

On the 18th en 19th of Februrary i’m presenting a 2 day course on Adobe Air with Flex at multimediacollege, so for everybody who wan’t to learn how to use Air in depth you can contact me or my employer to get your seat reserved.
