Multimania Speaker

Multi-Mania 2008 fully booked

Multi-mania has always been one of my favourite multimedia events. First as student, later as attendee, last 2 years as speaker. It all started as a very small award show, now a full day event with 5 tracks and a lot of international speakers. And for the first time it’s fully booked.

Next to my own session “AIR: playing with api’s”, you can find me at following sessions:

  • Ruling the web
  • We are Hooox
  • Having fun with Flash and Air
  • Flash 2D & 3D Effects
  • The Pixel Whisperer
  • 2M08 award show
  • 2M08 Party powered by Boulevart

1151: A conflict exists with definition myMC in namespace internal.

Last months i’m doing a lot of actionscript 3 flash development, and because the flash ide is terrible for actionscript development i’m use the combination of flash (compiling fla) and flexbuilder 3. The annoying thing is that if you use the instance names of your mc’s, you get errors warnings in fb that he can’t find that clip. But if you re-declare the instance name in your as3 class you get errors in flash while compiling. The cause is off course that you re-declare an already existing variable

Last week i was talking with Peter Elst about this problem and he remembered something that you can do to disable the automatic declaration of instance names in flash. But at that moment we couldn’t find it in flash.

Tonight i got the same problem and started to search the world wide web for a solution. So to disable the auto declaration of instances go to the “publish settings” in flash -> Flash Tab -> Settings (next to Actionscript 3.0) -> uncheck “Automatically declare stage instances”. Just make sure you declare your mc in the as class as public.

On Air tour coming to Brussels

Remove yourself from google analytics

It’s quiet annoying that every time you visit your own website, google analytics is picking you up as a visitor. After some googling. I found a solution, the trick is to set a cookie on your own computer and setup a filter in analytics ignoring everybody who has this cookie.

This is very handy especially if you have dynamic ip.

Facebook’s privacy policy

While reading my daily rss feeds i came across an article about Facebook via Mr. Doob’s

1 We will advertise at you

“When you use Facebook, you may set up your personal profile, form relationships, send messages, perform searches and queries, form groups, set up events, add applications, and transmit information through various channels. We collect this information so that we can provide you the service and offer personalised features.”

2 You can’t delete anything

“When you update information, we usually keep a backup copy of the prior version for a reasonable period of time to enable reversion to the prior version of that information.”

3 Anyone can glance at your intimate confessions

“… we cannot and do not guarantee that user content you post on the site will not be viewed by unauthorised persons. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the site. You understand and acknowledge that, even after removal, copies of user content may remain viewable in cached and archived pages or if other users have copied or stored your user content.”

4 Our marketing profile of you will be unbeatable

“Facebook may also collect information about you from other sources, such as newspapers, blogs, instant messaging services, and other users of the Facebook service through the operation of the service (eg, photo tags) in order to provide you with more useful information and a more personalised experience.”

5 Opting out doesn’t mean opting out

“Facebook reserves the right to send you notices about your account even if you opt out of all voluntary email notifications.”

6 The CIA may look at the stuff when they feel like it

“By using Facebook, you are consenting to have your personal data transferred to and processed in the United States … We may be required to disclose user information pursuant to lawful requests, such as subpoenas or court orders, or in compliance with applicable laws. We do not reveal information until we have a good faith belief that an information request by law enforcement or private litigants meets applicable legal standards. Additionally, we may share account or other information when we believe it is necessary to comply with law, to protect our interests or property, to prevent fraud or other illegal activity perpetrated through the Facebook service or using the Facebook name, or to prevent imminent bodily harm. This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, agents or government agencies.”

Speaking at Multi-Mania

It’s becoming a yearly tradition to speak at the greatest Belgian multimedia event.

My session is going to be a 120 minute hands-on session about AIR. You will play with the Sqlite, file-system and drag and drop.

So see you all at multi-mania (may 23th 2008)!

Belgium’s greatest writer stopped.

Goodbye to a man who made words sing.

Sometimes a man’s got to do, what a man’s got to do.

After spending almost three beautiful years four days a week at multimediacollege and 1 day a week at my own little company i decided to make the big switch. From tomorrow on i will be spending my days searching my own clients, doing my own projects and most of all living at my own pace.

Its not a goodbye to multimediacollege, i think we can see it more like another way of working together. In the near future you will still find my in front of the mmc classroom, talking about flash, air and maybe some flex (the more creative side).

What is going on at Dreams & Creations at the moment? Together with syntetik we’re finishing up the Cercled’O site and starting up some other very cool projects. For an Antwerp based agency we’re building two corporate websites. And in the first week of May we will launch together with Resilion an amazing playground for children between 8 and 12 years old. In the spare moments i try working on some experiments and writing my first conference presentation.

And than the question i hear the most: “When will there be a portfolio site?” The answer: “We’re working on it, it will be online somewhere this year ;-). One spoiler maybe? Think Rubik!”.
